Why Won't (some) Programs Work in Vista?

While Windows Vista is based off the Windows XP/2000 platform, it does several critical things differently.Essential files often have different names and are stored in different locations, which may baffle programs based on the file structure of earlier Windows versions. The new 'aeroglass' 3D interface can also cause havoc with programs which make use of the Windows XP desktop interface, rather than having their own internal control environment.

One of the major reasons that older applications might fail to work, is Vista's new set of extensive security features. User Accounts Control (UAC), the ever-present 'confirm or deny' permission boxes that pop up when you try to install a program or open a program that changes system settings is one of these.

A common situation where UAC becomes a problem is during legacy software installation. You may encounter error messages during the installation procedure, or it may fail altogether and suddenly de-installl itself half way though. If you encounter this kind installation issue with an older program, it's very likely salvageable by requesting an "elevated execution level."

In other words, we need to tell Windows Vista to run the installation files for your program "as Administrator". To do this,

- Right click on the installation application file,
- Click "Run as Administrator" just below Open File Location ( or alternatively properties > compatibility > and check privilege level to "run this program as an administrator").

A less visible culprit is the new Windows Resource Protection (WRP) feature which replaces the Windows File Protection feature of Windows XP.

Tweaks that will make your Windows Vista boost!!

Windows Vista is an operating system developed by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Prior to its announcement on July 22, 2005, Windows Vista was known by its codename Longhorn. Development was completed on November 8, 2006; over the following three months it was released in stages to computer hardware and software manufacturers, business customers, and retail channels. On January 30, 2007, it was released worldwide, and was made available for purchase and download from Microsoft's website. The release of Windows Vista came more than five years after the introduction of its predecessor, Windows XP, the longest time span between successive releases of Microsoft Windows.

Windows Vista contains many changes and new features, including an updated graphical user interface and visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker, and redesigned networking, audio, print, and display sub-systems. Vista also aims to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network, using peer-to-peer technology to simplify sharing files and digital media between computers and devices. Windows Vista includes version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, which aims to make it significantly easier for software developers to write applications than with the traditional Windows API.

1. Speed Up Windows Vista Start Menu Search

As you execute a search you will be using the search box located in the start panel. Then Vista will start searching the file index without any prompting. Keep in mind that the file index will be very big due to the fact that it has all files included on your hard drive. If you are looking to speed up your searching methods then you can try this. Go to your Start Menu and narrow down the scope of the search. In other words try to narrow down what you are looking for. Instead of a general term use something more specific. There are two ways in which you can do this.

The first way is called the Registry hack and for that this is what you have to do.

1. Step one: Open up the registry editor using the word regedit.
2. Step Two: Guide to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer and then choose the Advanced key.
3. Step Three: Locate and then right click on the Start_Search Files and then select the Modify key.
4. Step Four: You now have to change the Value to Zero.
5. Step Five: Then restart your Explorer.exe or you can simply just reboot the computer.

If this method does not work for you then you can try this:

1. Step One: Using your mouse right click on the Start button and then choose the Properties key.
2. Step Two: then click on the button that says Customize.
3. Step Three: Then see all of the checked items, uncheck the Search Communications.
4. Step Four: Then reset the search files to the setting Dont Search for files.
5. Step Five: Click the Ok button.

2. Increase your SATA Disk Drive Performance

If you are looking to increase your SATA Disk Drive Performance you can definitely do so. What your first step is in doing so is setting up your write caching. But keep in mind as you do that there is a risk of data loss and corruption in the event of a power loss. This loss is only significant in a personal computer, the risk is a lot less in a lap top because, it runs on batteries.

To increase the SATA Disk Drive performance you can follow these simple steps:

1. Step One: Start by clicking on the Start Button and then enter the Device Manager and then hit the enter key.
2. Step Two: Expand the Disk Drives so they are not carrying too much information which will slow them down.
3. Step Three: Then right clock on the hard disk drive and then choose the Properties key.
4. Step Four: Then where it says Policies, you want to have checked off the Enabled Advanced Performance key.
5. Step Five: The click the Ok button and then close the device manager and you are all set.

3. Windows Powered Smart Display

What is the Windows Powered Smart Display ?

What this is, is part of the Windows XP Professional Desktop. It is used in conjunction with the Remote Desktop Connection which is used through a wireless LAN link. This link is then used to get into your XP desktop from anywhere in the wireless range. So in other words, it is a remote wireless connection that your computer can use as along as the computer sits in the range of the wireless access.

Here are some other features that the Smart Display has:

The Smart Display has some great features, there is an on the screen keyboard which actually uses handwriting recognition software. It will allow you to use a USB mouse and keyboard if you are not used to the onscreen device yet . It can be used with a docking station and a mouse and keyboard. It is like using a small desktop computer from anywhere in the house or office. You have to keep in mind that the Smart Display itself does not have any file storage at all but the information that you use on the Smart Display will actually be stored on your desktop.

4. User Access Control

The User Access Control, this does not have to be used and can be turned off by simply clicking the Start button and then click the new Tools Menu and then scroll down and then when you see the access control key click it off. Then reboot your system.

5. Speed Up your Windows Vista Aero

The way Windows Vista is set up is really just for show. But because it is a new systems it can decrease the speed of your system. There are really only two ways to increase the speed of the Aero interface that is on your Vista system.

The first way is to Disable the Transparent Glass Effect:

1. Step One: Click on the Desktop icon on your screen and then choose Personalize.
2. Step Two: Choose the Windows Color and Appearance of your choice.
3. Step Three: Make sure you remove the check from the enable Transparency key.

The second way to speed up the Aero is to remove the Windows Minimum and Maximize the Animation key. You can do this by:

1. Step One: Start by clicking the Start Menu and then enter the System Properties Performance and then hit the enter key.
2. Step Two: When you see the Visual Effects section, remove the check mark from the Animate Windows When Minimizing and Maximizing.
3. Step three: Click Ok.

6. Added Wi-Fi Security

Added Wi-Fi Security, When you are looking for more security, go into the Network and Sharing menu and then click on Customize and choose the Public key . This will tighten up your Wi-Fi security when you are on public Wi-Fi.

7. Add Copy as Path

Simply hitting the shift key and then right click on a folder or you can choose any icon adds Copy as path and Open as command window here, you can edit them to the Windows Defender. Open up the Windows Defender and then click on the Tools key and then click on the Software Explorer and then take off the programs that you dont want to run.

8. Keyboard short cut secret

Using a left to right format give the icons on your Quick Launch bar a number, this way you can launch the icons in order of preference.

9. Free Up More Space on your computer

In order to do this you can use the Windows Disk Cleanup . This will get rid of files that you dont use, it will also get rid of memory and other operating system that contain files of unwanted material. By getting rid of the junk you can free up a lot of space for the important things you need

10. Run as Administrator

You have to check because there is some software that you will not be able to install, even though you are logged in as an Admin. Simply right click in the mouse in the setup file and simply choose the Run as Administrator.

It can be a bit irritating when you type something in the search bar of firefox, hit enter and suddenly realise that you've actually forgotten to open it in a new tab and instead opened search results in the current pages you're reading.

Well take heart, as firefox has just the fix or you. Type "about:config" (without quotation mark) into the URL Address bar and after saying yes to the warning type in "browser search opening tab"(without quotation mark) into the fiter field. Double-click on the line that appears to turn it from "False" to "True" and restart Firefox. Next time you use the search bar, it will autamatically open your searc rsult in a new tab.

GREAT DAY FOR THE WASHING - CD

ARE your CDs scratched? What may at first appear to be an unusable CD due to scratches may be salvageable. While compact discs (CDs) are remarkably durable, it’s nearly impossible to prevent scratches and scuffs from occurring from time to time. The resulting damage can be either a skip in your favorite songs track or, in the case of data CDs, the loss of that proposal you worked on for two weeks. Dont panic....!!!

Try to Placing a CD under the tap and washing the data side gently with soap can remove smudges but cause a disc to become unreadable. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the soap off afterward, and dry the CD thoroughly before putting it back into a player.

Or If there is stubborn dirt or grease on the disc you'will try to run warm water over the damaged disc to remove dust, gently rub it with your finger while you are washing it, and use a gentle detergent or liquid soap (with the water) or rubbing alcohol (in place of water). Any time you rub or wipe a CD, you should do so by starting at or near the center of the disc and rubbing straight outward toward the edge to prevent further scratching.Shake the water off and let the disc air-dry (do not dry it with a towel or cloth, and don't sun-dry it either).

Try to play the disc. Many times a good cleaning is all that is needed. If, however, problems persist after cleaning, try to play the disc in a different CD player. Some players handle scratches better than others; computer CD drives tend to be best. If you can get the CD to work in one CD player - especially your computer’s - but not in others, try burning a new disc. The CD burner on your computer may be able to read the CD well enough to produce a perfect copy. You may wish to try this even if the CD doesn’t play correctly on the computer.

My C Drive, give me options.

I has formatted my pc, after the virus attack, but the virus is still there. Another big problem that arises is when I double click at C drive, it gives you an option to choose a program to open. I will try to run my antivirus but so even after the virus being cleaned, I' ll find that I'm still unable to access my C drive from My Computer. So I know, now my computer have been infected by autorun.inf created by virus.

A lot batch of virus creates an autorun.inf drives files at the root of your local drive and USB flash. The reason for this is, when you open or double click "My Computer" and sort to access has drive, it will run the repugnant virus to your computer. Very often antivirus is whitebait to remove executable virus from system goal not autorun.inf. This is because autorun.inf that's located at the root of your drive is only year instruction spins that tells Windows what to automatically run when you access the drive from My Computer.

For computer experts, one look and they' ll know they had to remove the autorun.inf drive file from C. Usually the autorun.inf cannot be easily deleted because it has a system, read-only, and hidden file attribute. Sounds easy for an advance computer user but might be tough for a begginers.

Here's, I'll show you, simple way to heal this problem, download "Disk Heal". "Disk Heal" as has useful tool that restores the condition of your storage device after being infected by has virus. Multipurpose Thumb drive

USB flash drives are NAND-type flash memory data storage devices integrated with a USB (universal serial bus) connector. They are typically small, lightweight, removable and rewritable. A Thumb drive or USB stick is capable of being much more than just a handy portable storage device. By using the right applications (which we will show you in a short while), it can be turned into a virtual Swiss knife that can be used on any Windows PC. The selected tools here are categorised into four groups, and not only offer convenience but also contain an easy 'Start Menu' similar to the familiar 'Launch pad' of U3 sticks.

You can always buy a U3 stick with a pre-installed Start Menu, and some programs pre-loaded on it. But a closer look at the fine print reveals all its limitations. U3 only functions with Windows 2000 or XP. Besides, compatible sticks are hopelessly overpriced and commercial programs such as 'Zoom Player' have to be purchased separately in a special U3-Version.

One would rather prefer our solution of using a standard USB stick to suffice completely for your needs. Only if you are going in for Office and Multimedia sticks, should you select the latest model that offers enough space for a complete office or a film collection.

Here, we have compile a number of applications and utilities that make up or define the type of 'stick' that you really need. Be it for general utility work, general browsing and office work as well as purely entertainment, we have it all here!

A) The Utility Thumb drive

An 'Utility Stick' allows you to look after your own system. A low-priced stick with a storage capacity starting from 15 MB would suffice for this purpose. With it, you can do the following in a flash:

REMOVE SPYWARE AND VIRUSES: 'ClamWin' Portable' is a reliable tool to get rid of digital viruses. The only disadvantage is that the automatic update does not function in the portable version of this tool.

REPAIR THE REGISTRY: 'Reg-seeker' checks the Registry for errors, removes outdated or abandoned entries and makes Windows faster with over 20 tuning settings.

CLEANING INFESTED PC: You can free your computer of viruses and bugs with 'McAfee Avert Stinger'.

CLEAN UP UNWANTED DATA: The 'General Disk Cleaner' frees the hard disk of unwanted files that decelerate -the system.

B) The Office Thumb drive

Dragging along your laptop everywhere is passé. The USB pack 'Office-Stick' co ntains a complete mobile office for every Windows PC. Since MS Office programs are larger than recovery tools and since you also want to find place for your documents, it is preferable not be miserly with the storage space here. A practical way out is to use the latest USB 2.0 stick since its programs can lead considerably faster than on the slower USB 1.1-based devices, Once you have done this, within minutes, the Office stick can:

WRITE TEXT DOCUMENTS: The interface of the tool 'Abiword portable' is similar to that of Microsoft Word. You can process or create Word documents, HTML-pages and much more.

REPLACE. OFFICE: 'Open Office portable' contains the text processing 'Writer', the presentation tool 'Impress', the formula generator 'Math', the graphics program 'Draw', the spreadsheet program 'Cale' as well as the database application 'Base'.

READ PDF FILES: 'Foxit Reader' is a free and fast PDF document viewer with a surprisingly rich feature set.

SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS: 'EssentialPIM' manages appointments, contacts and 'to-do' lists. The tool imports data from applications like 'Outlook', 'TreePad' and `Google Calendar'.

SEND SECURE EMAILS: Business correspondence should always be encoded. This is why we have selected a version of the mail program 'Thunderbird portable' that has been upgraded with the cryptography functions 'EnigfVlail' and 'PGP'.

APPOINTMENT REMINDERS: The Open Source-Calendar 'Sunbird' comes from the Mozilla foundation just like the above mentioned 'Thunderbird', hence both these programs work well together.

C) The Internet Thumb drive

The 'Internet-Stick' is especially for those who are always hooked to the Internet.

FASTER SURFING: Firefox, one of the most popular web browsers is also available in a portable avatar. 'Firefox portable' can easily be armed with convenient additional functions using plug-ins. Moreover, it occupies little space on the USE stick.

UPLOADING FILES: The FTP-Client 'FileZilla' supports data transfer over Socks 415, HTTP, SSL and SFTP along with the normal FTP-Protocol,

CREATE A HOME. PAGE: The Web-Editor 'NVU' makes this task very easy. This is a neat, scaled-down alternative to full-blown land more expensive) applications like 'Frontpage' or 'Dreamweaver.

CHATTING: 'Gaim' is nicely suited to chatting. It supports AOL, Yahoo, MEN, ICQ and Jabber messengers.

COMMUNICATE WITH EVERYBODY: 'Miranda IM' is another multi-messenger which establishes contact with users from ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Google Talk, IRC and Jabber. It can also be upgraded using plug-ins,

D) The Multimedia Thumb drive

Music, films, games—everything that entertains is packed on our 'Multimedia Stick'. If you wish to take a larger film collection with you for a vacation, you better take a bootable USB hard disk instead of a stick. This will enable you to:

CONVERT AUDIO FORMATS: 'Audacity' converts the latest audio formats such as MP3 into other formats like OggVorbis, for instance. You can even cross-blend songs or defamiliarize them with echo and sound effects. However, this does not function with DRM-supported files.

ENJOY MOVIES AND MUSIC: The 'VLC Media Player' can not only play almost all audio and video files but can also stream audio and video files of all types over a local network.

RIP CDS: 'CDex' saves audio CDs that are not copy-protected and converts them in MP3, VQF or AAC. it uses the LAME MP3 Encoder to convert between formats and this is a relatively easy task even for novices, thanks to the extensive online help available.

EDIT IMAGES: 'Gimp' allows you to edit and create images as required. It has quite a few tools and effects embedded inside this unassuming application.

SOLVE PUZZLES: 'Sudoku` brings a version of the puzzle with figures for puzzle enthusiasts who need to kill time while
traveling or during office breaks.

E) The Personalised Thumb drive

If you still find the four portable it application packs insufficient for your requirements, there's another option to avoid disappointment.

You can create your own personalised application pack. All you have to do is log on to either portableapps or portablefreeware and download the application you are looking for. Once done you need to install the 'PortableApps Suite Base 1.0' application on to your USB drive. If the file you have downloaded is of the PAF file format, you can click on the options button of the PortableApps Suite Base 1.0' main screen and select 'Install a new App' and select the path of the file.

In case the file you have downloaded is a standalone EXE file (Executable file which do not require installation), create a new folder with the same name as the application in the 'PortableApps' directory of your USE drive.

Using this second option, you just need to copy the EXE file into the folder which you have just created and your application is ready to use.

With these tools, you are now armed to enhance the functionality of your trusty USB drive, which till now might have probably been used only to transfer data from one computer to another. Do let us know which of the discussed USB packs are your favourites!

Get Your Mozilla Firefox, Excellent

Download mozilla firefox for free here: mozilla firefox

Mozilla Firefox is an excellent web browser that does a much better job than Internet Explorer when it comes to protecting your privacy and computer security. Unfortunately, Firefox can sometimes be slower than Internet Explorer. The speed difference between the two browsers is one of the main reasons why most people do not change their browser from the quicker yet more vulnerable Internet Explorer to the slower but more secure Firefox browser, the other reason being that Firefox introduces many new features that simply take more time to learn than some users are willing to invest. To get the best of both worlds - speed and security of browsing - you can download Mozilla Firefox and speed it up with these tips.

Pipelining : This tweak is very easy to accomplish. On your Firefox web browser address bar,

- Type "about:config",
- Press "Enter".
- Scroll through the list of values and look for these three crucial pipelining settings:

1) network.http.pipelining,
2) network.http.proxy.pipelining,
3) network.http.pipelining.maxrequests.

You can use the filter to easily find each of these entries.

For the pipelining entry, you should change the value to true. Just double click the false value to make this change. For the maxrequests entry, the default setting is four. Change the value to your desired number. This value determines how many page requests Firefox is capable of making. You can go as high as 8 to speed up your tabbed browsing. Finally, go to proxy.pipelining and change the value from false to true.

Doing the above steps will give you greater browsing speeds by allowing Firefox to process and send requests simultaneously instead of waiting until a response has been received from a previous request. This will also reduce network bottlenecks by packing multiple requests into a single data packet.

Increase Your Firefox Memory Cache: Your computer will automatically allot a memory cache for your Firefox browser. Increasing your browser cache will actually increase the amount of objects that your browser can retain, which cuts down on time spent retrieving information from your hard disk or a web server. As a result, your frequently visited pages will load much faster.

You can modify the cache settings by going to the Firefox tools menu and clicking on Options. From here, click on the "Advanced" tab, then the "Network" tab. On the network tab, you can specify any cache size you like, but it is doubtful you will need more than about 32 Megabytes of cache.

Block Unwanted Advertisements: One of the best ways to speed up Firefox is by using an Ad Removal extension, such as AdBlock Plus. Download here AdBlock Plus. And it works to block annoying banner ads. AdBlock Plus also features a "learning" feature, meaning you can right-click on unblocked ads and set them to be blocked, as well. Even with no other optimizations, Firefox will load most pages much faster than Internet Explorer when using AdBlock Plus, because it does not have to worry about downloading all of the annoying, unwanted ads that clutter up so many webpages.

Another plugin, called FasterFox, implements a large number of tweaks based on increasing the speed of your browsing. Download Here : FasterFox , With these tips, you can speed up Firefox considerably, so don't let the slow performance you may have experienced deter you any longer. Firefox works to provide a much safer browsing experience than Internet Explorer, and its plugin interface allows for unprecedented levels of customization and convenience.
