There has been a lot of speculation and anticipation surrounding Microsoft’s BUILD conference which started today in Anaheim, California. We can’t be there ourselves, so here’s a link to Winrumor’s liveblog, and be sure t 4: Windows pen and other input options improved.o check out their website for more exciting developments. We’re excited about the new stuff! Are you?

“Delivering Fast Boot Times in Windows 8″. To recognizes that boot time is one of the features most discussed about, and says the Windows division wants your boot to be as fast as possible. It comes as a welcome addition to the information that we’ve been given about Windows 8 – Windows 7 and its predecessors seem like lightyears behind Apple products in terms of booting up. I’m sure that everyone reading this post has encountered long periods of frustration as your computer restarts in what seems like an eternity.

Today, mornig Steven Sinofsky (the president of the Windows Division at Microsoft, as we all know by now) has posted another entry on the “Building Windows 8” blog, centered on the UI of Windows 8 and how the new Metro experience could affect consumers.

There is no doubt that Windows 7 has been a huge success. “Hundreds of millions of people rely on the Windows 7 UI and existing Windows apps and devices every day, and would value (and expect) us to bring forward aspects of that experience to their next PCs.” Sinofsky writes. He recognizes that Windows 7 powers business software, a wide variety of apps that people rely on, and provides a level of precision and control that is necessary for certain tasks. In other words, the desktop experience provides things that you can’t do as easily with a touch-only interface. Sinofsky points out that people don’t want to carry around two devices; those who have embraced tablets also usually own a laptop for those times when they need more precise control or need to use an application that is not/will not be available for use on tablets.

An important goal for Windows 8 he emphasizes is the harmony of the two UIs: one similar to Windows 7, and a Metro interface. The inception of Windows 8, he reveals, began in the summer of 2009, before Windows 7 shipped, and the goal? To completely reimagine Windows and asking some important questions: How do you attract a wide set of developers to a new platform? How can installing and removing applications be made painless and easy? How do you prevent applications from draining battery power? With these questions and more in mind, the building of Windows 8 began.

The bottom line is that Windows 8 brings together all the power and flexibility you have in your PC today with the ability to immerse yourself in a Metro style experience. There are no compromises. You carry on device that does everything you want and need, which is connectable to the peripherals you desire.

What do we think? I personally applaud Mr. Sinofsky; I agree wholeheartedly with his approach. I think we can all agree that no one uses tablets exclusively. Whether at work or at home, you have another PC. For more “heavy” tasks like modeling 3D objects or animating video, we automatically look to our desktop or laptop. Isn’t it peculiar that almost no one writes applications for a tablet on a tablet, while desktop programs are always written on a desktop? The unification of the tablet UI and the desktop experience is a necessary process and one that must be well thought out.

today is a big day for the Windows team. At the BUILD conference we are about to preview Windows 8. Windows 8 represents a reimagining of Windows from the chipset to the experience. Since this is a week focused on developers, we also detailed the bold underpinnings of the re-imagination of the Windows platform, tools, and APIs. We will show off the opportunity to build applications for all of the customers of Windows 8, no matter what type of PC they have—from tablets to laptops to convertibles to desktops. We will show the brand new tools that allow you to code Metro style applications in HTML5/JavaScript, C/C++, and/or C#/XAML. The investments you have made as developers in all of these languages carry forward for Windows 8, which lets you choose how to best make use of the Windows 8 system services. We talked about Windows 8 being a no-compromise OS for end-users, and it is also a no-compromise platform for developers.

Many are interested in Windows 8 for ARM processors. Everything we showcased today at BUILD also runs on the ARM-based Windows PCs being created by ARM partners and PC manufacturers. Windows 8 running on ARM will ultimately be available with ARM-based hardware that you can purchase. ARM requires a deeper level of integrated engineering between hardware and software, as each ARM device is unique, and Windows allows this uniqueness to shine through. The new development tools enable you to start today to build Metro style applications that will seamlessly run on x86 (32 and 64 bit) or ARM architectures. Even if you use native C/C++ code, these tools will enable Metro style apps to target specific hardware if you choose. As new PCs become available for testing, PC manufacturers will develop seed programs for developers.

You probably want to try out the preview release—and you can. Starting later tonight you can download the Windows 8 Developer Preview. This includes a 64-bit (x64) build with development tools to build apps, and a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) build without development tools. The releases also include a suite of sample applications (please note these are merely illustrations of potential apps, not apps that we intend to ship with Windows 8). The ISOs are linked to from http://dev.windows.com.

Upgrade from Windows 7 installation is not supported for pre-release code; only clean installs are supported. Reminder: this is a developer preview release and is not meant for production. It is not a beta release. We will be updating the release with various quality updates and drivers over the coming weeks/months just to exercise our overall update and telemetry mechanisms.

A Cyber criminals who are exploiting public interest in his death with spam messages that infect computers with a virus able to steal bank account numbers and passwords, according to Gary Warner, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) director of research in computer forensics. Warner and the other researchers at the UAB Spam Data Mine began tracking the celebrity-focused spam early on Tuesday, June 30.

This virus been tracking the cyber criminals behind this spam and the associated virus for many weeks, but it is just today that they have shifted their strategy by embedding their virus into an e-mail that claims to link you to a Web site that will reveal Michael Jackson’s killer.

The spam related to this virus has taken many forms, including e-cards, shipment tracking links and, most recently, a fake update to Microsoft Outlook, but with the high interest in Michael Jackson’s death the cyber criminals decided to change their delivery method to capitalize on that

Google also, has confirmed that the surge of Michael Jackson-related searches on Google News Thursday was first interpreted as an attack on its service.

Google News was inaccessible for some people Thursday afternoon right as rumors of Jackson's death began to circulate, replaced by an error message reading "We're sorry, but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now."

Of course, those queries were quite legitimate, as millions around the world searched for accurate information regarding Jackson following reports that he had suffered cardiac arrest. The spike in queries began at about 2:45 p.m. PDT Thursday, and Google thought the traffic was an attack for about 25 minutes before realizing what was going on.

Google also noted that it saw a huge spike in mobile searches. Yahoo's data backed up Google's; it set a record for unique visitors in a single day with 16.4 million visitors, and its lead story on Jackson's death was the most highly-visited story in its history.

A mass-mailing worm is using Jackson's death as bait, computer security company Symantec has discovered.

The worm sends out spam emails with the subject "Remembering Michael Jackson" and an attachment named "Michael songs and pictures.zip."

The .zip file contains another file called "MichaelJacksonsongsandpictures.doc.exe" which is a copy of the worm.

When opened, the worm automatically downloads onto the user's machine, then spreads through its email program and also onto removable drives such as USB sticks.

Cyberfusion Sudden Attack Tournament will be seeing some intense action as different teams from around the country blast their guns for more than 20,000RM worth of cash and prizes!The gamers who participated in Cyberfusion’s One Nation Cyberjaya world record attempt for the longest LAN party have succeeded in style. Supervised by officials from the Guinness World Records, Malaysia now officially holds the world record for longest LAN party.

Starting at midnight on Saturday and ending at 4pm on Sunday, 274 gamers played non-stop for 40 hours. The participants brought and boasted the power and superiority of their own computers while waiting in line to get registered. All players were given five minutes bathroom break per hour which can be accumulated according to the Guinness rules.

Many took full advantage of the rule to accumulate their breaks and used the time to sleep in their car.However, rumours of a player who did not take a single break in 40 hours could not be verified.

There were also a few who faltered or did not return within the stipulated time and were subsequently disqualified. The original plan was to break the record of 36 hours by an extra two which would have set the record at 38 hours. Just before the 38th hour mark, when the record had already been broken, the organisers asked the players if they could push on to 40. By a majority vote, they agreed buoyantly to continue.

With energy drinks strewn all over the floor and sleep deprived gamers sluggishly walking to the exits, some still had the energy to talk about what this means for Malaysian gaming.

Eighteen-year-old student Ng Yun Bin, who was playing a variety of games including DotA and Left 4 Dead, said Malaysian gaming will certainly benefit from this. “Malaysia is already quite good in many games and we have many events here already,” said Ng. “This record will give us even more exposure and more events will be held here.”

IBM, Sun Microsystems Deal Could Create High Tech Juggernaut

With a reported $6.5 billion cash offer on the table for Sun Microsytems, IBM would be well positioned to snag significant market share in enterprise server hardware and software, particularly in Linux and Java software for Web application development. The deal would also give IBM a leg up in the data storage, government systems and telecommunications markets.

IBM may acquire Sun Microsystems for as much $6.5 billion in cash, a premium of more than 100 percent over Sun's March 17 closing price of $4.97 a share. The proposed deal -- neither confirmed or denied by IBM and Sun -- would give IBM a powerful market position in open-source Linux and Java software for Web application development, data storage, government systems and telecommunications.

The Wall Street Journal, which reported March 18 the two companies were in talks about a possible deal, said Sun had been shopping itself in recent months, including approaching IBM server rival Hewlett-Packard and Dell. If a deal is made for $6.5 billion, it would be IBM's largest ever acquisition, eclipsing the $5 billion IBM paid for Cognos in 2007.

"It would certainly create a high tech juggernaut in the software and server business," said Technology Research Research senior analyst John Spooner. "It's an opportunity for IBM to take out a competitor and gain market share, particularly in open-source products."
Both IBM and Sun build enterprise servers that use open source to operate without Microsoft's Windows software or Intel's microprocessor chips. IBM is the world's largest server manufacturer with 31 percent of the market while the struggling Sun is in fourth place at 10.6 percent, trailing IBM, HP (29.5 percent) and Dell (11.6 percent).

"A deal would certainly give IBM a significant boost in open-source products," Spooner said. "IBM would simply expand what Sun's already doing." Spooner added it wasn't surprising Sun was seeking a buyer. "The bulk of Sun's business comes from U.S. companies that aren't really buying anything right now. IBM has plenty of cash."

Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates, noted that Sun owns a lot of intellectual property with a "pretty good portfolio. IBM thinks it can do more with those assets than Sun. It seems like a pretty good fit and it seems to make sense."

In November 2008 -- stunned by a nearly $2 billion quarterly loss -- Sun announced a massive restructuring of its business into three divisions that resulted in the cutting of up to 18 percent of Sun workers around the world. Under the plan, Sun collapsed its organization into three primary business units: Application Platform Software, Systems Platforms and Cloud & Developer Platforms.

Sun's fourth quarter loss was a huge reversal from the same period in 2007, when the high-end hardware and software company reported an $89 million profit.

"Sun is still fairly valuable," Kay said. "Sun has not been particularly well positioned lately. IBM will create more outlets for Sun's products.

Apparently fearing it would get lost among all its other product announcements yesterday, Microsoft waited until today to get official with its new SideWinder X8 mouse, which boasts the same BlueTrack technology as the company's new Explorer mice but in a more gamer-friendly package. Those touches include a play and charge system to let you keep playing while your battery recharges, switchable DPI settings, interchangeable feet to suit your "glide preference," seven programmable buttons, and a dedicated macro record button, to name a few.

Happily, they're (probably) not exaggerating the battery life, touting 30 hours of "active gaming" on a single charge. While the G7 gives you two hot-swap batteries in case you run out mid-genocide, the X8 has a play-and-charge cable that you unwrap from the small hockey puck. You've also got the usual gaming mouse standards—on-the-fly DPI switching, macro recording, and a total of seven buttons, plus the scroll wheel now tilts left and right.

Ergonomically, this looks better than the previous two SideWinder mice. The sharp "bump" at the top has been smoothed out and should be more comfortable, and it's less angular overall. Most importantly, they're halfway to admitting defeat on the thumb buttons. Though still vertically aligned (damn it), the uncomfortable, hard-to-hit circles have been replaced by sloping rectangles that make them easier to distinguish and press instinctively. While I love that they're doing things differently, I think they just need to concede that horizontal thumb buttons are the standard for a reason—it's better.

Unfortunately, you're going to have to wait even longer to get your hands on this one, with it only set to be released in February, 2009 (for $100).

Ultra mobile PCs are beginning to make a big splash in the computing scene and HTC is not one to be left out of this exciting new product segment. THERE is no doubt that computers are getting smaller with each passing day. The underlying trend in today’s mobile computing market is not on massive desktop replacement notebooks but rather on smaller ultralight portable notebooks.

Already we have seen a couple of innovative ultraportable notebooks such as the Asus Eee PC in recent months. Naturally, HTC is not about to get left out of the race and has brought in their own ultra mobile PC, the HTC Shift.

Design - On the outside, the Shift sports a very interesting design which, to put it simply, is small for a notebook but huge for a PDA. Small and roughly slightly larger than your average paperback novel, the Shift is a very portable machine.

Although you aren’t likely to fit the Shift into your pocket, it is still light enough to carry around for everyday use. Weighing in at only 800g, the Shift is very travel friendly indeed and should come in useful for long distance travels.

The Shift can be used in one of two ways. You can hold the Shift in one hand and use the stylus with the other as you would a regular Tablet PC. One neat thing about the touchscreen is that you can still navigate reasonably well with your fingers without the stylus.

Alternatively, you can place the Shift on a flat surface and slide out the main screen to reveal a hidden Qwerty keyboard. You can then fold the Tablet portion of the Shift up to work on it as if it were a notebook PC and use the tiny touchpad on the right side to shift your cursor around.

Overall, the Shift is a nicely designed device with stylish curves and a smooth metal exterior that’s attractive to the eye.

Features - As mentioned earlier, the Shift is large for a PDA thanks to its large 7in screen. While it isn't nearly as big as a small notebook's 12in or 13in screen, the screen is still capable of displaying sharp images. The default display resolution is 800 x 480 pixels, which doesn’t offer a lot of room to work with, but you can bump the resolution up to 1,024 x 600pixels.

The viewing angles for the screen is also good, with almost no colour shifting as you view it from different angles. I wouldn’t consider it the best screen for watching videos or movies, but it does a very good job in presenting images and other information. Two tiny stereo speakers make up the Shift’s audio capabilities. While small, these speakers do pack a punch. Testing out a video file, I found the speakers to be sufficiently loud and there’s even stereo sound effects too.

Still, take note that these speakers won’t be audible if you are in a noisy environment; so be sure to bring a pair of headphones along. I found the Shift’s built-in keyboard to be on the small side, forcing me to constantly fight with the keyboard to get it to register the keys I’m aiming for.

Without a doubt, the tiny keys will prove to be a big problem for people with large fingers. The keys are also difficult to type in low light conditions since there is no backlighting. The Shift does, however, feature a handy handwriting recognition tool that intelligently appears whenever you use a text application like Notepad. The feature basically allows you to write words on the Tablet with the stylus and have it converted to actual text on the document.

I must say that I was genuinely impressed with the feature and often found myself typing with it more than the keyboard itself. The Shift has one solitary USB port on the side, though you can easily expand it using the included USB hub. The hub basically provides you with an additional three ports so you can plug in an external keyboard or mouse complete with a Ethernet port should you need a wired connection.

If you find the Shift’s 7in screen too small, you can always use the VGA-out port to expand your workspace or project a presentation on a larger screen. If you want to add an additional security layer to your data, the Shift has a fingerprint scanner that can be used as your security pass to access the Shift.

Performance - It may not sound like much but running on an Intel A110 (800MHz) processor with 1GB of RAM, the Shift is a reliable workhorse for office productivity tools. However the Shift isn’t geared for high-performance so photo manipulation and video editing are out of the question.

Still, Vista runs remarkably well on the Shift with applications launching fast and running smoothly without any noticeable slow downs. Navigating around Vista Business was made difficult by the rather small trackpad. After having used it, I have to say that I’d rather use the stylus to quickly click and navigate around.

Web surfing on the Shift is made easy by the fact that there are so many options such as WiFi, HSDPA or 3G to go online with. For entertainment, the Shift comes with its own media portal called Origami Central that adds some visual flair to the Shift’s media interface.

The Origami interface is nice and flashy looking but the little applications or widgets such notes, Calendar and To-do list in Origami aren’t as responsive as I would have liked. Vista isn’t the only operating system available on the Shift — there’s also SnapVUE, which is a stripped down version of Windows Mobile 6 that basically gives you access to a number of basic PDA applications such as a calendar, weather, contacts and email.

Visually, SnapVUE’s Today screen bears a lot of resemblance to HTC’s TouchFlo user interface found in some of its previous smartphones. While SnapVUE does not offer you the full Windows Mobile experience, it does give you quick access to your e-mail messages, giving you alerts and a preview of your new e-mail messages when you leave the Shift on to accept push e-mail messages.

The operating system is relatively fast to boot up and from our tests, we found that SnapVUE booted up faster than Vista (no real surprises there) when starting up from standby mode. SnapVUE does however have many limitations. It does not have many of the features that make up a full smartphone, such as making phone calls or web browsing. Oddly enough, I was still able to send and receive text messages from people on my SIM contact list.

Overall, I didn’t like the fact that SnapVUE felt very restrictive and limited. I was not able to install or run additional applications on SnapVUE, so I was forced to make do with the basic applications provided. Battery life for most mobile devices aren’t necessarily great — the Shift is no exception as it can only last two hours while running Vista.

The Shift fairs slightly better if you leave it running on SnapVUE in standby mode though its mileage varies depending if you leave functions such as WiFi, Bluetooth or push e-mail on. It is rated to last up to 53 hours with push-email enabled and up to 10 days with the feature turned off.

Conclusion - The HTC Shift is a great mobile device designed for users on the go. Its main benefits include having a light portable design and a decent operating system in Windows Vista Business. The choice of SnapVUE is great for accessing essential information fast but it has too many limitations that bar it from being as useful as Vista. The built-in keyboard also feels too small and cramped for typing long text documents. Still, the HTC Shift is a great device when you are not in office and need to access your important documents quick and efficiently while on the go.

Malaysians witness, a solar eclipse

Malaysians can witness a solar eclipse today from 4.30pm to 7pm. The National Planetarium will have a special programme from 4pm to give the public a chance to see the eclipse as it happens, the National Space Agency said in a statement. Although only a part of the eclipse can be seen in Malaysia, enthusiasts will be able to see the moon obscuring 52% to 82% of the sun depending on their location.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes directly in front of the sun. Due to the relative distances, the sun would appear as a very bright ring behind the moon, resulting in an annular eclipse. the full annular eclipse, so called because at its peak the eclipse is surrounded by an annulus, or ring, of fiery light. Because the moon's orbit is elliptical, its distance from Earth and thus its apparent size varies over time. Annular eclipses happen when the moon looks too small to completely cover the sun, an event that occurs about 66 times a century. The next such occurence would be in 2026.

“The eclipse will begin at about 4.30pm in Malaysia when the moon first touches the sun’s disk,” the agency said.

The celestial spectacle will be more visible when the moon slowly covers the sun to form a crescent shape until maximum obscuration occurs at about 5.50pm.

“At its final contact around 6.55pm, the moon’s shadow slowly disappears just before sunset,” the agency said.

Geocosmic Centre of Yijing Meta-Science Research Malaysia academic consultant Dr Chuah Chong Cheng said solar and lunar eclipses during Chinese New Year were a rare phenomenon.

“The same thing happened last year when a solar eclipse occurred on the first day of Chinese New Year on Feb 7 and the penumbral lunar one on Chap Goh Meh.”

Dr Chuah said for those who are superstitious, the solar and lunar eclipses could mean “double jeopardy”.

University Sains Malaysia’s Astronomy Atmospheric Science Unit lecturer Assoc Prof Chong Hon Yew advised people not to look directly at the sun but to use a solar filter when observing the eclipse or see its reflection in a pail of water so as not to damage their eyes.

Why Won't (some) Programs Work in Vista?

While Windows Vista is based off the Windows XP/2000 platform, it does several critical things differently.Essential files often have different names and are stored in different locations, which may baffle programs based on the file structure of earlier Windows versions. The new 'aeroglass' 3D interface can also cause havoc with programs which make use of the Windows XP desktop interface, rather than having their own internal control environment.

One of the major reasons that older applications might fail to work, is Vista's new set of extensive security features. User Accounts Control (UAC), the ever-present 'confirm or deny' permission boxes that pop up when you try to install a program or open a program that changes system settings is one of these.

A common situation where UAC becomes a problem is during legacy software installation. You may encounter error messages during the installation procedure, or it may fail altogether and suddenly de-installl itself half way though. If you encounter this kind installation issue with an older program, it's very likely salvageable by requesting an "elevated execution level."

In other words, we need to tell Windows Vista to run the installation files for your program "as Administrator". To do this,

- Right click on the installation application file,
- Click "Run as Administrator" just below Open File Location ( or alternatively properties > compatibility > and check privilege level to "run this program as an administrator").

A less visible culprit is the new Windows Resource Protection (WRP) feature which replaces the Windows File Protection feature of Windows XP.

Windows Vista is an operating system developed by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Prior to its announcement on July 22, 2005, Windows Vista was known by its codename Longhorn. Development was completed on November 8, 2006; over the following three months it was released in stages to computer hardware and software manufacturers, business customers, and retail channels. On January 30, 2007, it was released worldwide, and was made available for purchase and download from Microsoft's website. The release of Windows Vista came more than five years after the introduction of its predecessor, Windows XP, the longest time span between successive releases of Microsoft Windows.

Windows Vista contains many changes and new features, including an updated graphical user interface and visual style dubbed Windows Aero, improved searching features, new multimedia creation tools such as Windows DVD Maker, and redesigned networking, audio, print, and display sub-systems. Vista also aims to increase the level of communication between machines on a home network, using peer-to-peer technology to simplify sharing files and digital media between computers and devices. Windows Vista includes version 3.0 of the .NET Framework, which aims to make it significantly easier for software developers to write applications than with the traditional Windows API.

1. Speed Up Windows Vista Start Menu Search

As you execute a search you will be using the search box located in the start panel. Then Vista will start searching the file index without any prompting. Keep in mind that the file index will be very big due to the fact that it has all files included on your hard drive. If you are looking to speed up your searching methods then you can try this. Go to your Start Menu and narrow down the scope of the search. In other words try to narrow down what you are looking for. Instead of a general term use something more specific. There are two ways in which you can do this.

The first way is called the Registry hack and for that this is what you have to do.

1. Step one: Open up the registry editor using the word regedit.
2. Step Two: Guide to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer and then choose the Advanced key.
3. Step Three: Locate and then right click on the Start_Search Files and then select the Modify key.
4. Step Four: You now have to change the Value to Zero.
5. Step Five: Then restart your Explorer.exe or you can simply just reboot the computer.

If this method does not work for you then you can try this:

1. Step One: Using your mouse right click on the Start button and then choose the Properties key.
2. Step Two: then click on the button that says Customize.
3. Step Three: Then see all of the checked items, uncheck the Search Communications.
4. Step Four: Then reset the search files to the setting Dont Search for files.
5. Step Five: Click the Ok button.

3. Windows Powered Smart Display

What is the Windows Powered Smart Display ?

What this is, is part of the Windows XP Professional Desktop. It is used in conjunction with the Remote Desktop Connection which is used through a wireless LAN link. This link is then used to get into your XP desktop from anywhere in the wireless range. So in other words, it is a remote wireless connection that your computer can use as along as the computer sits in the range of the wireless access.

Here are some other features that the Smart Display has:

The Smart Display has some great features, there is an on the screen keyboard which actually uses handwriting recognition software. It will allow you to use a USB mouse and keyboard if you are not used to the onscreen device yet . It can be used with a docking station and a mouse and keyboard. It is like using a small desktop computer from anywhere in the house or office. You have to keep in mind that the Smart Display itself does not have any file storage at all but the information that you use on the Smart Display will actually be stored on your desktop.

4. User Access Control

The User Access Control, this does not have to be used and can be turned off by simply clicking the Start button and then click the new Tools Menu and then scroll down and then when you see the access control key click it off. Then reboot your system.

5. Speed Up your Windows Vista Aero

The way Windows Vista is set up is really just for show. But because it is a new systems it can decrease the speed of your system. There are really only two ways to increase the speed of the Aero interface that is on your Vista system.

The first way is to Disable the Transparent Glass Effect:

1. Step One: Click on the Desktop icon on your screen and then choose Personalize.
2. Step Two: Choose the Windows Color and Appearance of your choice.
3. Step Three: Make sure you remove the check from the enable Transparency key.

THE biggest news that emerged from Apple’s September announcement wasn’t Steve Job’s health, but rather the company’s brand new line of redesigned Macbook notebook computers. Mac fans everywhere have been waiting for an update of the popular Apple notebook for years and at long last, their wait is over.

Big changes

ALL METAL: The new Macbook looks just as good on the outside with a metal aluminum casing

The biggest change you will find in the new Macbook is that the version has an aluminum chassis, similar to that of the higher-end Macbook Pro.

The Macbook is a solid block of aluminium carved from inside out to form the shape of the notebook with the components neatly tucked inside — an aesthetically pleasing design indeed.

The new Macbook is a solidly built notebook that not only looks great but it feels thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

While it is slightly slimmer, I can’t say that it was easy to carry around as it did feel heavy in my backpack as I lugged it around from place to place.

Other improvements include a large multi-touch trackpad that removes the single button and integrates the click button below the trackpad. Essentially this means you can click anywhere on the trackpad to engage the button.

Aside from it being big, another more subtle change in the trackpad is its new touch-based gestures that we first saw on the Macbook Air in January.

What this essentially allows users to do is navigate with their finger gestures. While the two-finger sliding motion for scrolling down pages is commonplace, there are other more cool gestures that nicely integrate with the Mac OSX.

For instance, placing four fingers on the trackpad and sliding it up and down will give you the ability to engage Exposé or hide all running applications. You can also switch between running applications using the App Switcher by flicking four fingers to left or right.

The new trackpad is fairly accurate in detecting where you point your finger and it is a joy to use with such a large surface area to move around.

In fact, I found the trackpad so usable that rarely I found a need to use a mouse save for performing delicate tasks like correcting an image on Photoshop.

Simply striking

A strikingly attractive glossy 13in LCD screen (1,280 x 800pixel resolution) covered by a single sheet of glass, dominates the Macbook’s interior.

Both pictures and text look brilliantly clear, colourful and sharp on the screen and it was a plesure to read webpages. Even in the dark, the screen is very visible thanks to its LED backlighting to keep it bright while consuming less power.

While I had no trouble using the Macbook indoors, using it outdoors proved to be quite difficult with all sorts of things reflecting back on the screen, making it difficult to view what I was reading or typing. Suffice to say, it is advisable to do your work indoors with the Macbook.

Another notable change to the interior portion of the Macbook are the keys, which now bear more resemblance to the Macbook Air with jet black keys that light up in the dark. While typing this review I found the keys were well-spaced and comfortable to type on.

The inclusion of shortcut keys on the top row of keys make it easy to access various features such as widgets, Expose and media playback functions.

All the Macbook’s connectivity ports — two USB ports, Ethernet port as well as a headphone and microphone jack occupy the left side of the Macbook.

Some of the things you may notice missing from the usual line of ports is a Firewire port and VGA-out port.

Firewire users may need to stick to their older Macbooks if they are still keen on using their cables.

Another new addition is the use of a Mini Display port to link your Macbook to project images on a bigger monitor. The drawback to this is that the various extension cables for VGA and DVI-out are sold separately.

The Macbook has an above-average battery performance. I were able to get three hours of power, which is pretty decent for a notebook this size.

One cool feature we liked is how the Macbook has its own built-in battery indicator located on the left side of the notebook. There’s a small button with some tiny LED lights, indicating how much battery power is left in the notebook.

Although it’s a bit small, it’s still a useful tool to have.

Performance

Looking at the hardware side of things, the new Macbook runs on the standard Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with two stock variations one with a 2GHz chip and another with a 2.4GHz chip. Both variations come standard with 2GB of DDR3 RAM that’s expandable up to 4GB.

The processor holds up pretty well while multitasking with different applications running in the background.

We put the Macbook through the paces, using it for some web surfing, watching YouTube videos and playing a DVD movie on the notebook’s optical drive while typing this review.

In the end, I have to say I was pretty impressed that the Macbook was able to do all this without even slowing down.

Storage doesn’t prove to be an issue on the Macbook either, as you get a minimum of 160GB and a maximum of 250GB (found in the 2.4Ghz model).

The Macbook can alternatively be fitted with a smaller and faster, 128GB solid-state drive — however the trade-off is the significantly higher cost.

If you are looking to do more than just web surfing on the Macbook, you are in luck. Apple has done away with the old Intel integrated graphics chip and have instead equipped all new Macbooks with an nVidia GeForce 9400M chip, which gives the Macbook the added power to perform tasks typically reserved for the desktop such as playing games as well as performing some video/photo-editing.

Conclusion

After spending a few days using the Macbook, I have to say that I came away impressed.

On the surface, the new Macbook is a stunner that is sure to catch the eye of any gadget enthusiast.

I also like the inclusion of the bigger trackpad with touch gestures, which makes things like browsing webpages to simple tasks of navigating around the notebook a breeze.

In terms of performance, it’s hard not to like the Macbook. It’s a solid performer and packs enough punch to handle basic games and video/photo-editing applications.

However, there are a few issues that prevent the Macbook from earning a maximum score. For one, the screen is overly glossy to the point that it is just too difficult to use outdoors no thanks to the reflections.

Also, the lack of any VGA or DVI-out port forces users to purchase them separately.

Nevertheless, the new Macbook is worth considering as it manages to strike the right balance between power, looks and portability.

Pros: Excellent new design; multitasking is not a problem; decent battery life; big trackpad with touch-gesture support.

Cons: Lacks VGA and DVI-out port; screen is too glossy for outdoor use.

Acer aspire one- How to convert Linpus Linux OS to Windows XP OS step by step.

I have a new brand acer aspire one 110 on linpus linux as its os. I want to change it to windows xp....(coz with new linpus linux i cannot go more further in action... :-))

Im know installing Windows XP or any other operating system is easy if you have a USB optical disc drive. But if all you’ve got is a USB flash drive and another computer with a DVD burner, you can still install Windows XP or others windows or many Linux distributions for that matter. (acer aspire one 110 dont have a dvd or cd drive).

After spending most of three days to find a solutions to installing Windows XP on my acer aspire one 110, mini-Note with trial and error... I thought I’d share my results with you. Remember, your results may very, so while these are the steps that worked for me, they may not work for you. For example, depending on the version of Windows XP you are using, you may need a different hotfix to install the webcam drivers.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. 1 USB flash drive, 1GB or larger
2. 1 Windows XP installation disc (or others)
3. Assorted files that I’ll describe as we go along.
4. Others laptop or pc with usb drive and cd or dvd drive.

Preparing the flash drive

First, we need to prepare the flash drive.

1. Download and unzip this file, which should contain 2 folders:
a) Bootsect
b) USB_prep8.
2. Navigate to the USB_prep8 folder and click on usb_prep8.cmd. This will bring up a Windows console window.
3. Press any key to continue and a PeToUSB window will open.
4. Make sure your flash drive is selected, and click start to format your flash drive.
5. When the format is complete, click OK, but do not close the PeToUSB window or the Windows Console.
6. Open a new console window by typing “cmd” into the run box in the Windows Start Menu.
7. Find your Bootsect folder (if you’re not used to DOS commands, you can type “dir” to list directories and files, type “cd foldername” to navigate to a folder name - called foldername in this example, and if there’s a long folder name you can save time by typing the “cd” and just the first few letters and then hitting the Tab key to fill in the rest of the name).
8. Once you’re in the Bootsect folder, type “bootsect.exe /nt52 g:” if “g” is the letter assigned to your flash drive. If it’s E, then change the letter to e. If it’s Z, make it z. Get it?
9. When this is done, you should see a message letting you know that the bootcode was updated, and you can close this console window (but not the other console window).
10. Close the PeToUSb Window, but make sure not to close the remaining console window yet
11. You should now see a list of 8 options in the console.
12. Select 1 and find the drive with your Windows installation disc.
13. Select 2 and pick a random drive letter (but not one that’s already on your PC, since this will be a virtual drive used for copying your files).
14. Select 3 and enter the drive letter for your USB flash drive.
15. Select 4 and follow the rest of the on-screen directions and you should be all set.

The process should take about 15-20 minutes. When it’s done, you should have a bootable USB stick that you can use to install Windows XP the same way you would if you had a CD/DVD drive.

Notes :First of all, there’s a chance you may get down to step 15 and the program will tell you that it can’t create the virtual drive. This may happen if you’ve already gone through the whole process and are trying to do it again to fix problems. The solution seems to be rebooting your computer and trying again. Or at least that’s what worked for me.

Installing XP on the acer aspire one 110 mini-note

Now it’s time to load Windows XP onto your cer aspire one 110 mini-note. If you have a USB CD/DVD drive, you probably skipped all the stuff above, and that’s fine. Most of the following steps should work as well. These instructions should work whether you’re installing Windows XP on a system that came preloaded with SUSE or Windows Vista.

1. Insert your USB flash drive in one of the USB ports on your Mini-Note.
2. Power on your computer and hit F9 to bring up a boot device selection window.
3. Choose your flash drive, or if you’re using a USB optical disc drive, select that instead.
4. Select 2 for a text-based installation.
5. Create one large NTFS partition (using the quick option will save you a lot of time)
6. Follow the on-screen directions.

Notes : At least once during the install process, you will be prompted to reboot your computer. If you try to let it boot from the hard drive, you’ll get an error message. What you need to do is hit F9 again when it reboots and this time select option 1 for a GUI setup.

Configuring Windows XP for booting.

Once you’re done installing XP, you may notice that you are unable to boot into Windows from the hard drive. If you have the USB disk installed, again hit F9, and select the GUI option again. Windows should start. You’ll need to edit the boot.ini file:

1. Type “msconfig” into the run box in the start menu
2. Select the BOOT.INI tab
3. First, try the “Check All Boot Paths,” option. This may solve your problem by finding and removing the incorrect boot settings.
4. You may also need to edit the boot.ini file manually. Boot.ini must something look like this :

‘multi(o)disk(0)rdisk(o)partition(1)\Windows=”Windows XP Pro” /fastdetect’

The steps below will show you how to backup and edit its.

1. Open your System Properties by right-clicking on My Computer and choosing Properties. Alternately, you could type “sysdm.cpl” into the run box in the start menu
2. Select the Advanced Tab
3. Click the Settings option under Star
tup and Recovery
4. Click the button that says Edit to open up your boot.ini file in Notepad. It’s a good idea to save a backup now by selecting Save As, and saving the file to a place where you won’t forget it.
5. Now you can safely edit the boot.ini file, changing the partition number or other settings to more closely resemble the one I listed above. Save your file, and hopefully you’ll be able to reboot without your USB stick.

Configuring Windows XP

Now you should have a working Windows XP desktop, but you’ll find that you can’t connect to the internet via Ethernet or WLAN, you have no sound, and no support for the Fn keys. In order to fix these issues you’re going to need a few driver files. Acer has added Windows XP drivers to its support page for the acer aspire one 110. You should try these official drivers and install its.

Look like everything is fine but got a case the webcam are not functional so what you can do is :

1) Go into the Device manager - Uninstall the Chrystal eye Webcam shows up under "Imaging Devices" (right click, choose Uninstall).
2) Download the WLAN Atheros v7.6.0.224 Driver from the Acer Website.
3) Install the driver... Restart - Windows will then recognize your webcam (look in the device driver - see above). You will then have to log into Windows Messanger or Yahoo messenger or skype to "see" your webcam.

Not able to open drives on hard disk by double click...?

Sometimes it happens in windows XP, that you are not able to open drives on your hard disk. When you double clicking on the drives icons or right click on the drive/explore in My computer , the drive does not open.But don’t worry this is not a big trouble it can be fixed easily.

This problem is generally caused by most of the viruses which infect windows XP system. They block or restrict your access to any of the drives.A lot of virus, creates an autorun.inf, file at the root of your local drives and USB flash drive. The reason for this is when you open My Computer and tries to access a drive, it will run the virus to infect your computer. Very often anti-virus is able to remove executable virus from system but not autorun.inf. This is because autorun.inf that’s located at the root of your drive is only an instruction file that tells Windows what to automatically run when you access the drive from My Computer.

So even after the virus being cleaned, you’ll find that you’re unable to access your C drive from My Computer. Some people double click C drive, a search window will appear. For some, it’d say that it cannot find the script or file to run. Most common of all, when double click C drive, it gives you an option to choose a program to open.

For computer experts, one look and they’ll know they had to remove the autorun.inf file from C drive. Usually the autorun.inf cannot be easily deleted because it has system, read-only, and hidden file attribute. You can go to command prompt to remove the file attributes and then delete it. Sounds easy for an advance computer user but might be tough for a novice.

Normally when a virus infects a windows system which causes a drive opening problem, it automatically creates a file named autorun.inf in the root directory of each drive.This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive. You have to just delete this file and restart your system to correct this problem.

FIX 1

1. Open Start>>Run and type cmd and press enter. This will open a command prompt window. On this command prompt window type the following steps.

2. type cd\

3. type attrib -r -h -s autorun.inf

4. type del autorun.inf

5. now type d: and press enter for d: drive partition. Now repeat steps 3 and 4. Similarly repeat step 5 for all your hard disk partition.

Restart your system and your trouble will be fixed.

1. Open you notepad.
2. Save a notepad as a autorun.inf
3. copy or send that file to a problem drive.

Used a free Disk Heal software. Disk Heal is a useful tool that restores the condition of your storage device after being infected by a virus. Disk Heal is a useful tool that performs many functions. Initially it was a program which fixed disk problems that occur after a virus has been removed with a few additional features like changing the icon of a drive. Currently it performs various other tweaks as well.

Fix double click c drive problem

To fix your C drive problem, download, install and run Disk Heal. Make sure you have administrator privileges. Click the Fix button, type the drive letter and click Fix.

With Virtual Machine (VM) software, a single computer can run more than one operating system, and switching between them is as easy as switching between applications.

And there are many reasons why you would want to run more than one OS all at once. For instance, if you have recently switched to Windows Vista, you are bound to come across an application that is not compatible with the new OS. Instead of losing hair over it or hunting for a PC with Windows XP, you could just install a VM app like Virtual PC 2007 and run Windows XP virtually on your Vista machine.

If you are a fan of older games, you may discover that they only work in Windows 98 or Windows ME. Using VMware Player, you can quickly create a VM running Windows 98, and avoid the need for a separate machine or dual-boot system. Or if you are more adventurous and have installed the 64-bit flavour of Vista, you will find out sooner or later that it doesn't support 16-bit applications. You will probably never need to run a 16-bit application, but if the need arises, then the easy way to do this is to run a 32-bit OS virtually.

Play safe: We live in a very dangerous online world and you should not be downloading just any application or game from the Internet and running it on your machine, unless that is your idea of fun. Instead, you could plonk the application in your virtual OS to see if it misbehaves.

Even if it the app is a virus and ends up killing your virtual machine, it just takes a few clicks to restore the virtual OS to its pristine state. Also, if you are like us and love to test beta software, you know that things can get ugly at times.

Instead of practising abstinence, you could just run it in a virtual machine and if things should go wrong, your PC won't be affected and your virtual machine can be easily restored to a pristine condition.

Linux: Or maybe you are just tired of hearing your techie friends rant about what a great OS Linux is and how it is superior to Windows. But you probably never had the chance to try Linux because you are not ready to abandon Windows or you don't even want to create another partition for Linux.

So now you can find out what the excitement is all about by installing it within a VM and if you find that your friends' claims are not true, you can nuke Linux without leaving a trace on your PC. And if you happen to like it, then there are plenty of Linux distributions for you to check out and you can even run them concurrently in separate VMs.

Hardware considerations: There are plenty of other advantages to running VM software but there are issues to consider too. Firstly, you should re-examine the license conditions for each OS you install under the VM software, even though you are installing the OS on the same machine.

For instance, if you only have one copy of Windows Vista then it is illegal to install the same copy on your virtualisation software. Of course, this doesn't apply to Linux or any of the open source OSes, so you can install as many copies as your want.

Next, you should have a decent machine with ample RAM as the VM will not only share processor time but also need a chunk of RAM to run its OS. To run a VM smoothly, we recommend a PC with at least an Intel Pentium 4 3GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor and 1GB of RAM, although you will be a lot better off if you had a dual-core processor and more RAM.

However, no matter how fast a processor or how much RAM you have, some applications are still off limits – you are not going to be able to play any DirectX 9 or graphics-intensive games with current VMs. If you plan to do this, you are better off installing the OS on a separate partition and creating a dual-boot system. To get started with virtualisation, you will need a VM app – there are many available but the popular ones are Virtual PC 2007, VMware Player or Server, and Parallels Desktop.

IF you are looking for a music player phone you can do little wrong in picking a Sony Ericsson Walkman phone. The Sony Ericsson W890i (Sony Ericsson) 3G handphone doesn’t have any fancy features but that doesn’t make it any less fun to use. The Walkman phones are known for delivering excellent sound quality and the W890i is the latest addition to the series.

The W890i is a pretty looking slim candybar phone — its smooth curved black and gold metal exterior looks both classy yet elegant. It also has a very simple design as there aren’t too many function buttons aside from the usual Walkman shortcut key and camera shutter button. And it is so ridiculously thin and light (it only weighs 78g) that once I forgot that I had it in my pocket.

Usability

* TINY BUTTONS: The W890i's tiny keypad makes it difficult to type text messages.
* The W890i’s call quality is excellent as incoming and outgoing calls were crystal clear without any static or distortion.
* Typing text messages wasn’t as pleasant as the tiny buttons looked intimidating — it’s as if the phone was designed specifically for people with small fingers.
* I have relatively small fingers and even I had trouble typing text messages as the keys are too close to each other.
* It doesn’t help that the four-way navigation pad is also tiny and you could easily press the hang up button while typing messages.
* Given time and a little bit of patience (lots of it), I was able to work with the tiny keys.
* Also, the W890i has decent battery stamina and I was able to use it for two days on a single charge.

Multimedia

The W890i boasts great sound quality even when played back on the phone’s speakers. This of course makes ringtones all the more pleasing to hear. The music player also uses the Walkman 3.0 interface which also doubles as an all-in-one media interface for managing pictures, music and videos. And searching for songs is easy as you can look up by artists, albums or tracks.

Moving on, the 3.2-megapixel camera is fairly basic with no autofocus or flash for taking shots in the dark. Also, because there is no macro mode for the camera, taking close up shots of objects is next to impossible. While there is a high degree of noise present in pictures, it is only noticeable when zoomed in really close. Suffice to say, pictures taken on the W890i are perfect for posting up on a blog or photo sharing site, which will often downsize the photos.

Overall, the camera isn’t too bad — the photos turned out nice with good contrast and vibrant colour. Plus, you can choose to view all the photos as a slideshow complete with music and flashy transition effects. Very nice indeed. The camera can record short videos at QVGA (320 x 240pixels) resolution at 30fps (frames per second) which for the most part was serviceable but looked extremely blurry when there is the slightest hint of movement.

The W890i comes with other features that compliment the Walkman phone’s music playing function such as the TrackID application which identifies songs based on a five second clip played to it. Also, the phone also comes with a pre-installed with Google Maps for viewing maps and satellite images to help you find your way around.

Pros: Walkman music player; great call quality; decent camera.
Cons: Tiny keys; camera lacks macro mode and autofocus.

The health benefits of grains are well documented; they are certainly more nutritious than white rice. Often thought of as side dishes, they readily absorb other flavours, so work especially well with rich sauces and casseroles, making them excellent main dishes. It is used as a cereal, in soups, and for making bread. In India, it is often made into chapatti.

Polenta – This ground corn, popular in northern Italy, is often cooked with milk and cheese into a paste, allowed to set, then cut into slabs and pan fried. It is used as a substitute for bread.

Quinoa – Has the highest protein content of any grain. Touted as the new superfood, quinoa has the unusual characteristic in that when cooked, it is soft and delicate but still has a bit of bite to it due to the outer germ. It has a mild, slightly nutty flavour but soaks up flavours well. Quinoa is good in hot casseroles and soups, stews and stir-fries, or cold in salads.

Quinoa flour is used in making pasta and a variety of baked goods such as pancakes, bread, muffins, and crackers. The seeds can even be sprouted and eaten raw, or “popped” in a dry skillet and eaten as a dry cereal.

Microsoft could still get Yahoo?

Microsoft has walked away from its $47.5 billion offer for Yahoo, could the software giant come back later and still snap up its Internet rival? It’s possible but highly unlikely, say analysts surveying the wreckage of Microsoft’s failed effort to close the deal. By pulling the deal, Microsoft hasn’t foreclosed it, estimates there is a 15 percent chance a Microsoft-Yahoo deal will still happen.Microsoft could make another run at Yahoo in a few months, especially if Yahoo reports weak earnings for the current second quarter, driving its stock price even lower. Then Yahoo could be ripe for a takeover at a lower price than the $33 a share that Microsoft ultimately offered over the weekend before withdrawing. As it is Yahoo stock fell 15 percent Monday to close at just over $24 a share.

Standard & Poor’s equity analyst Scott Kessler, says he is “surprised that the Microsoft-Yahoo deal fell apart. If an analyst says they weren’t, they’re lying.” Yet he quickly adds that “time is of the essence with Microsoft.” A hostile bid could have taken months and would have faced regulatory hurdles. The deal would not have been done until mid-2009, he said.

Still, Yahoo Chief Executive Jerry Yang left the door open to a possible deal with Microsoft. “If they have anything new to say, we would be open," he told Reuters in an interview late Monday. "I am more than willing to listen.” “We were negotiating a way to find common ground, and then on Saturday they chose to walk away,” said the 39-year-old co-founder of the pioneering Internet company. “They started it, and they walked away.”

Shock waves from the deal's collapse are still registering with shareholders. “We’re disappointed,” says Ryan Jacob, the manager of the Jacob Internet Fund, which owns 150,000 shares of Yahoo. He says that he would have voted for the Microsoft offer and that Yahoo’s demand for at least $37 a share, $5 billion more than Microsoft's offer, was “unrealistic.” He said he wishes the Yahoo board had taken a more active role.

In the past, shareholders have helped force companies into a shotgun marriage. For example, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison won control of PeopleSoft and BEA Systems when shareholders ultimately supported his offer over the objections of company executives.

“This is going to play out over the next several months and there is still a chance Microsoft will buy the company for somewhere around $33 a share,” Todd Dagres, general partner at venture capital fund Spark Capital, told Reuters. “What Microsoft is hoping is that Yahoo shareholders get militant.”But shareholders may not be able to force the deal here.

For one thing, Yahoo is incorporated in Delaware, where some analysts say that it’s harder for shareholders to win cases against corporations. Also, Yahoo does not appear to have a high-profile shareholder activist like Carl Icahn, who helped broker the deal with Oracle as a BEA Systems shareholder.

Jacob says that, for now, he’s still going to hold onto Yahoo shares. But he doesn’t see how Yahoo is going to climb back into the mid-30s price range. And analysts say that although Yahoo is technically in play, there are no other likely suitors. “The reality is that no one else has the money that Microsoft has,” says Kessler, of S&P.

Jacob and some other analysts say CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang never wanted to sell to Microsoft. Yahoo is the company that Yang started and nurtured and he was more than reluctant to have it swallowed up by giant Microsoft. Still, some analysts think that Yahoo! can pull off a turnaround with Google’s help.

Yahoo is counting on a deal in which it will outsource its search ad business to Google. That deal could bump up Yahoo revenues by as much as 70 percent in 2009, according to JP Morgan. But it is no sure bet: Federal regulators are reviewing the proposed deal for potential antitrust implications.

“You can throw away lots of money trying to fend off Google,” says Jeffrey Lindsay, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein. “But on the Internet the guy who gets the biggest share first is usually the winner.”

He thinks Yahoo will link up with Google soon to appease investors. Yahoo then could use the billions in cash that the deal would generate to invest in new businesses.

Visit Kusadasi beaches with a visit to Ephesus. We will enjoy a teaching in the actual amphitheatre where Paul spoke to the Ephesians. We will see the most fully laid out Roman city that has been excavated. This is believed to be the best kept archeological site in the Mediterranean.

July 23
Visit the island of Patmos and John’s cave today. This is a quaint Greek Island where after our teaching at the cave, you can enjoy a stroll around the island, bicycle trip or even a scooter ride!

July 24
Full day visit to Santorini. The island widely thought to be the home of the Lost City of Atlantis. This island is also considered the most beautiful island in the world. You can visit the caldera and enjoy the thermal pools, bicycle, visit the Pompeii of the Greek Islands - Akritori. Quaint whitewashed homes, amazing shopping and never ending beaches is what you will encounter today.

Greek island of Sifnos this morning (beaches, BBQ and fun!) We will have an amazing beachfront teaching under shade but with tremendous views. You can take off scootering or bicycling around this quaint island overlooking the beautiful sea. We leave quite late this evening so there is plenty of time to enjoy a day on the Mediterranean Sea plus the island's amazing restaurants, shops, walks and sightseeing. It will be a day of rest for sure.

Arrive back in Athens this morning. This afternoon you will fly home or to off to the beautiful island of Malta for our extension with the BASE Institute.

Arrive and check-in to the Meridian Hotel, located on the shore of the sea with commanding views of the fortress. Our hotel is within easy walking distance to the fortressed city. Astronauts installed the European laboratory Columbus on the International Space Station on Monday, finally giving Europe its first permanent research facility in space. Houston, Munich, the European Columbus laboratory module is now part of the ISS. The $1.9 billion Columbus lab, 7 metres long and nearly 4.5 metres in diameter, is the heart of a $5 billion investment in the space station program by 10 European countries. It is lined with refrigerator-sized racks to be used for wide-ranging space research.

Leland Melvin and Dan Tani used a robot arm to lift the gleaming 10-tonne cylinder from the cargo bay of space shuttle Atlantis and slip it on to a station berthing port in a moment put off for years by shuttle problems.

Columbus was supposed to have been delivered in 2002 but was postponed by delays launching the space station's service module and then the explosion of the shuttle Columbia in 2003 that led to a suspension of flights for 2-1/2 years. Even at the end, nothing came easy for Columbus.

NASA had to postpone installation for a day when German astronaut Hans Schlegel, scheduled to take part in an accompanying spacewalk, fell ill. Space rookie Stan Love filled in and, working with lead spacewalker Rex Walheim, prepared Columbus for its move from the shuttle. In their bulky spacesuits, they struggled to attach a clasp for the robot arm, falling more than hour behind schedule.

The European Space Agency has counted on the successful deployment of Columbus and the March 8 launch of a cargo ship to proceed with programs that will include involvement in NASA's plan to return humans to the moon. This will be the first time Europe will have a permanent base in space. The first participation will help in reinforcing our technical expertise and our experience of operations to be able to go further and participate with the future of space exploration.

Japan is still waiting for NASA to launch its space station contribution a three-part laboratory named Kibo. The U.S. space agency plans to begin installing the Japanese lab during its next shuttle mission in March. NASA has 11 more construction and resupply flights remaining before the $100 billion station is complete and the space shuttles are retired in 2010.

TAN DAILIN LETS OUT AN AUDIBLE gasp when he is told that he was identified in the U.S. as someone who may have been responsible for recent security breaches at the Pentagon. "Will the FBI send special agents out to arrest me?" he asks. Much as they might want to talk with him, though, FBI agents don't have jurisdiction in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan province, where Tan lives. And given that he has been lauded in China's official press for his triumphs in military-sponsored hacking competitions, Tan is unlikely to have problems with local law enforcement. But Tan and his seven companions, who make up the self-proclaimed Network Crack Program Hacker (NCP1I) group, are taking no chances. A couple of weeks after they spoke to TIME, they shuttered the group's website, on which they used to proudly post specially designed hacking programs that could be downloaded for free. Visitors now find only a notice that the page is being redesigned or cannot access the site at all.

Tan and his fellow hackers may be lying low for now. But the controversy over the activities of hundreds of Chinese like them will only continue to grow. Though the evidence remains mostly circumstantial, a picture is emerging of a coordinated effort by Chinese-military authorities to recruit hackers such as Tan and his group to winkle out information from computer systems outside China and launch cyber attacks in future conflicts.

China has long regarded cyber warfare as a critical component of asymmetrical warfare in any future conflict with the U.S. From China's perspective, it makes sense to use any means possible to counter America's huge technological advantage. A current wave of hacking attacks seems to be aimed mainly at collecting information and probing defenses, but in a real cyberwar, a successful attack would target computer-dependent infrastructure, such as banking and power generation. "Can one nation deliver a crippling blow to another through cyberspace?" asks American Sam i Saydjari, head of the private computer-security group Cyber Defense Agency and former president of Professionals for Cyber Defense. "The answer is a definite yes. The Chinese know we are much more dependent on technology, and the more you depend on it, the more vulnerable you are."

Hacking attacks from the Middle Kingdom aren't new. In 1999, after U.S. planes bombed Beijing's embassy in Belgrade, and again in 2001, when a Chinese fighter crashed after a collision with a U.S. surveillance plane, Chinese hackers conducted cyberbattles with their U.S. counterparts. For several years beginning in 2003, U.S. government servers were subjected to a coordinated series of hacker attacks, code-named Titan Rain, which officials said had originated in China.

The scale and sophistication of the activities apparently conducted by Tan and his group—and their alleged ties to the People's Liberation Army (PLA)—are an insight into China's effort to establish a corps of civilian cyber warriors. A recent series of intrusions into the systems of Western governments and major corporations was blamed on China (though none of the intrusions have been specifically tied to Tan and his group). In December British media reported that the country's top ant espionage official had sent a letter to 300 major corporations warning that they faced attacks from "Chinese state organizations." In May computers in the office of German Chancellor Angela Merkel were compromised by programs that had originated in China. In June U.S. military officials said an attack from China had penetrated a computer system at the Pentagon—though nonclassified, it included a server used by the office of Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Beijing denies that it is behind hacker attacks. Jiang Yu, a spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry, described such reports as "wild accusations" and said they reflected a "cold war mentality."

Outside China, however, the worries continue. "Recent events have made Western governments very nervous that this is just the tip of the iceberg," says Saydjari. "[The Chinese] have launched the equivalent of a Sputnik in cyberspace, and the U.S. and other countries are scrambling to catch up."

Tan, a.k.a. Withered Rose, and seven other members of the NCPH workshop don't look as though they could bring the U.S. economy to a halt. All in their early 2os, rail thin and with the prison pallor acquired from long nights spent hunched over monitors, they look like what they are: a bunch of nerds. They refuse to give their real names, referring to one another by nicknames—Blacksmith, Firestarter, Fisherman, Floor sweeper, Chef, Plumber, Pharmacist. All vehemently deny having anything to do with attacks on U.S. government systems. "Messing with the U.S. Department of Defense is no small thing," says Floor sweeper. "We read about arrested terrorists, about Guantanamo. Who gets away with messing with the U.S. government?"

O.K., so what does the NCPH, which Tan founded in 2004 when he was a student at Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, actually do? The answer starts out vague, but eventually pride gets the better of the young men. They acknowledge that the group first got its reputation by hacking 400o of the hacker associations' websites in China. That was during their "young and hotheaded college days," as Fisherman puts it. The NCPH is also famous for the remote-network-control programs they wrote and offered for download. These programs, which allow hackers to take over other computers, are exactly the kind that were used to obtain documents, spreadsheets and other materials from U.S. government offices in the most recent attacks.

But according to two detailed studies by iDefense, a branch of VeriSign, an Internet-security company based in Mountain View, Calif., the NCPH created 35 programs that took advantage of vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office to implant so-called Trojans—programs that take partial control of an infected computer and can be used to send documents, spreadsheets and other files over the Internet. The two iDefense reports say that beginning in May 2006, the Chengdu group "launched a barrage of attacks against multiple U.S. government agencies ... The result of all of this activity is that the NCPII group siphoned thousands—if not millions—of unclassified U.S. government documents back to China." Citing evidence of Tan's close ties to the military and other Chinese hackers' organizations that have been suspected of acting on behalf of the military, the reports conclude that Tan and the NCPH were almost certainly acting on behalf of and funded by the Chinese armed forces. "Most likely," the reports suggest, "hundreds of these groups exist in China." Tan declined to comment on the studies.

In response to questions from TIME, a faxed letter from China's State Council Information Office said accusations that the PLA was involved in hacker attacks against overseas targets were "groundless, irresponsible and also have ulterior motives." The Chinese police, the letter said, had received no requests from overseas governments asking for investigations of Chinese attacks on their websites. But reports in Chinese newspapers suggest that the establishment of a cybermilitia is well under way. In recent years, for example, the military has engaged in nationwide recruiting campaigns to try to discover the nation's most talented hackers. The campaigns are conducted through competitions that feature large cash prizes, with the PLA advertising the challenges in local newspapers.

Tan is a successful graduate of this system. He earned $4,000 in prize money from hacker competitions, enough to make him worthy of a glowing profile in Sichuan University's campus newspaper. Tan told the paper that he was at his happiest "when he succeeds in gaining control of a server" and described a highly organized selection and training process that aspiring cyber militiamen (no cyber women, apparently) undertake. The story details the links between the hackers and the military. "On July 25, 2005," it said, "Sichuan Military Command Communication Department located [Tan] through personal information published online and instructed him to participate in the network attack/defense training organized by the provincial military command, in preparation for the coming Chengdu Military Command Network Attack/Defense Competition in September." (The State Council Information Office didn't respond to questions about Tan, and China's Foreign Ministry denies knowing about him.)

With the help of experts from Sichuan University, the story continued, Tan's team won the competition and then had a month of intense training organized by the provincial military command, simulating attacks, designing hacking tools and drafting network-infiltration strategies. Tan was then chosen to represent the Sichuan Military Command in competition with other provinces. His team won again, after which, the iDefense reports say, he founded the Nc PH and acquired an unidentified benefactor ("most likely the PLA") to subsidize the group's activities to the tune of $271 a month.

It's not what you would expect from a bunch of guys drinking beer (lots of it) in the back room of a hotpot restaurant in Chengdu. Suggest that they might hack for cash, and the NCPH crew is outraged. "The real hackers are not doing it for a name or money," says Fisherman, who sports a small diamond-stud earring. "The real hackers keep their heads down, finding network loopholes, write killer programs and live off social security."

Russia send another space freighter to orbital station

Russia will launch Tuesday a Soyuz-U carrier rocket with a cargo spacecraft on board to deliver food, equipment and other supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), a Mission Control.

The Progress M-63 space freighter is scheduled for launch from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan at 1:03 p.m. GMT on February 5, the spokesman said. It is expected to deliver 2.5 metric tons of cargo to support the ISS operation. The automatic docking with the orbital station has been set for 2:38 p.m. GMT on February 7. The current 16th expedition on board the ISS comprises U.S. astronauts Peggy Whitson and Daniel Tani, and Russia's Yury Malenchenko.

The ISS crew will also see a new face, with flight engineer Daniel Tani being replaced by European Space Agency astronaut Leopold Eyharts. The flight has been repeatedly delayed since December 6 over problems with faulty fuel tank sensors and a radiator hose. The launch of the 24th shuttle mission to the ISS is still uncertain, however, due to weather concerns making yet another delay extremely likely.

Meanwhile, NASA said on Monday that the repeatedly-delayed Atlantis space shuttle launch had been set for February 7. During the upcoming mission, the crew members will carry out three spacewalks, installing and activating the $2 billion Columbus space laboratory, which has taken some 10 years to construct and is Europe's main contribution to the International Space Station (ISS).

All of the other technical characteristics have remained unchanged with respect to a standard production engine, however. The use of this type of biofuel and the modifications made resulted in an increase in maximum power output (+ 10 hp at the same rpm) and torque (+ 4%) while overall weight was unchanged. The advantages to the environment translate into a 5% drop in CO2 emissions

The bio fuel car on display in Detroit is still labeled a concept, but the company says that it'd like to put it into production as part of its efforts to reduce fuel consumption and cut emissions 40% by 2012. The regions where ethanol is readily available – like the Midwest states, Brazil and Sweden – are not major markets for the sportscar maker. But ethanol is already being used in the ALMS and elsewhere, so Ferrari already has some experience with it.

Such disks, believed to be made of the material from which planets form, are common around young stars.

But this one is oddly bent, as though flying into a headwind, and that's exactly what it's doing. Dust grains normally orbit in a plane unless they're disturbed by something, But in this case, the star and its disk are plowing through an interstellar gas cloud. That produces a local wind that is blowing the dust backward, producing this meniscus-like or crescent shape.

The Moth was found as part of a systematic search for planet-forming disks that might shed light on how planetary systems, including our own, formed.

About 112 light-years from the sun, the Moth was detected because of the intense infrared light it emits. One of the things that drew us to this star system is how bright it is in the infrared. That intense radiation indicates the presence of an unusually large amount of dust. The dust is heated by the light from its host star [is heated].

The scientists were surprised that there was enough interstellar gas and dust to produce this effect, because our region of the galaxy is generally believed to be relatively gas free.

Another odd finding: a unique quadruple star system that packs four stars into a region smaller than the orbit of Jupiter. There is no reason to believe that the system is actually young, but the stars must have moved close together within the first 100,000 years or so of their lives because soon after, within the first 300,000 or 400,000 years, the gas all dissipates.

The two pairs revolve around each other about once every nine Earth years. The star system lies near the constellation Aquarius, about 166 light-years from Earth.

The study found it while studying the spectra of small, dim, stars relatively close to Earth. The newfound system seemed unusual because it appeared to emit four spectra superimposed on each other.
